How to Tell if You Have a Sleep Disorder

Everyone has a little trouble sleeping every now and then. However, have trouble sleeping every night means there is most likely a sleeping disorder that needs treating. If you think that you might have a disorder, or know someone who might, you should consult a doctor at once. However, if you want to know a little more about sleep disorders, read ahead. These are some of the most common disorders that people suffer from.

Sleep Apnea

This is a surprisingly common problem, especially for people who are on the heavier side. You might just think that you need to learn how to stop snoring, but you could actually be suffering from this condition. What happens is that the respiratory passages get blocked during sleep, causing the person to wake up with chest pains and a shortage of breath. Sleep Apnea can be treated by using a special device to assist in breathing.

Insomnia

This disorder is characterized by simply being unable to sleep. It can be caused by several factors, including medication, depression, and anxiety. Many people suffer from this disorder, but it is definitely curable. There are medications that can help insomniacs to sleep at night, but this can become a dependency. This condition can actually be cured with a few changes in behaviour, as well as through yoga and meditation practices. If you think you might have this disorder, you need to find out if it is being caused by something else, such as depression and have that treated first.

Sleep Walking

Sleepwalking is not as common as insomnia or sleep apnea, but it does plague thousands of people. People who have problems with sleepwalking can seem to be awake during an episode, even performing complex tasks or having a conversation. This can be caused by various factors, such as medication and sleep deprivation. This sleep disorder can be managed with the use of medication, psychotherapy, and in some cases, even hypnosis.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is probably the least common sleep disorder on this list, but there are hundreds of people who have it. People who suffer from this condition tend to suddenly fall asleep at odd times of the day. It is actually quite a serious neurological condition that can only be managed, not cured. People with this disorder often need therapy or counselling, medication, and various lifestyle changes in order to start to lead relatively normal lives.

RLS

RLS stands for Restless Leg Syndrome, and it is also known as Willis-Ekbom Disease. When you fall asleep, your body naturally shuts down and prevents you from acting out your dreams. With this disorder, that does not happen. People with this movement disorder flail and kick their legs involuntarily. This can happen even while awake. If you think you might have this problem, you should see a doctor at once. This is a serious but treatable condition. Treatment involves medication and certain lifestyle changes.

These are some of the most common sleep disorders. It is important that you see a doctor at once if you are concerned that you have any of these problems, or know someone that might.
